What exactly is IoT?

Redactie Xafax Redactie Xafax

What is IoT (Internet of Things) and Dutch translated: the Internet of Things? The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that has become complex. Here is a simple explanation of what it is and how it affects your entire existence.

But what exactly is it?
The Internet of Things is the Internet-enabled nature of modern physical devices, vehicles, and buildings. You may also have heard of IoT products as connected devices or smart devices.

How does the Internet of Things work?
Typically, Internet of Things devices have sensors and software that enable the collection and exchange of data over the Internet. IoT objects can be controlled remotely to enable direct integration with computer systems, reportedly resulting in economic benefit and improved efficiency for users.

For example, IoT retail applications can track a phone's location to learn a person's shopping habits. Companies will use this data to target individuals with special offers on their favorite stores and products.

A shopping app can also link to a smart refrigerator, which determines what food is needed (based on previous consumption) and sends the shopping list directly to a person's phone. In fact, it is entirely possible that a smart refrigerator can automatically order products without any human interaction.

IoT: a simple explanation
The Internet of Things is anything that connects to the Internet. The Internet of Things can also improve home security, via an alert or live camera feed sent to your phone when someone enters your home. IoT can even make the dream of a self-sufficient home possible. Imagine taking a bath, vacuuming or putting on the kettle - just by using a smart app.
