The Office 2021 software package will be released together with Windows 11 on October 5, 2021. The package is available for a one-time purchase and contains all known Office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneDrive. Microsoft reportedly plans to support the new Office suite for five years. Office 2019 is also supported for five years.
Office is the counterpart of Microsoft 365, a subscription for almost the same programs. However, Microsoft emphasizes that Microsoft 365 offers a number of additional capabilities that are not available through Office 2021. For example, the company mentions cloud-related functions, automation through artificial intelligence and more advanced security features.
There is also another package available for commercial customers, this is the Office LTSC (long-term service channel). This includes a dedicated dark mode for all software. It is not clear whether this function will also be transferred to the regular Office 2021 package.
