Customer case Enschede Library

The Enschede Library is the largest public library in Overijssel. In addition to the six branches, they are also active at schools and community centers, for example. The library is more than a place to borrow books. This way, visitors can arrange their banking or tax affairs in an accessible way and receive support. With this, the library achieves one of its objectives: not only to make people more proficient in the language field, but also in the digital field.

Since 2013, Xafax has been a supplier of smart library solutions for the library in Enschede. In addition to EasyAccount+, the Enschede Library also uses the Smart Workplace . Sebastian Slots is an ICT employee and digital skills specialist. He has been working at the library in Enschede for more than 10 years. Together with a team of 55 employees, he works on the library's objectives. The Education Team consists of 12 colleagues. They support customers with digital government and provide assistance with questions about the Smart Workplace.

What was the situation?

“Before we came into contact with Xafax, we had a number of permanent computers here. These could be reserved with a library card through our employees. This was very labor intensive because you had to supervise and do a lot of maintenance on the fixed computers. They had to be checked and continuously run updates. This was also prone to interference. Furthermore, we had an old printing solution. Visitors printed 10 pages and walked to an employee to pay for it. Intensive and very cumbersome.” The IT team then came up with EasyAccount+ . Visitors could log in themselves and see their credits. Sebastian says: “But because it was still on our own old hardware, it was still labor intensive. The high power consumption, which is of course also a hot item now, was also not desirable.”

The Smart Workplace

When the Enschede Library needed to replace the hardware, the Smart Workplace solution from Xafax was chosen. This means that the IT team has less work to do, but the same user-friendliness for the users. The 50 Smart Workplaces have been running in the library for two years and they are great.

Why did you choose the Smart Workplace?
“The low energy consumption and associated savings were a nice bonus, but two years ago that was not yet an issue. We paid particular attention to its low-maintenance aspect. We don't actually do anything about it ourselves anymore, if something breaks we call or email Xafax and then it is resolved. In the past you had to view, redesign or install the computer yourself and that is a much longer job than just making a phone call and having it resolved! The IT team is a lot smaller and we have relatively few hours to spend. The Smart Workplace is not labor intensive and, in my opinion, is a very nice solution.”

How easy or difficult was it to get started with the Smart Workplaces?
“There were a few things that needed to be fine-tuned. By this I mean things like the background on the desktop, we wanted our own city as the background. We are a large library, so it would be nice if it wasn't all standard. Also add programs, a certain photo editing program has been installed at our request. That was a question from our customers and after we submitted it to Xafax, it was arranged within a week or two. Other than that, the entire implementation went just fine.”

What is the Selfie Column?

“The latest addition we have made is the Kiosk . We call it the Zelfie column. A competition was held among colleagues to come up with a nice name. Because it said pay, but we didn't really like that. Selfie was the winning entry. This way you also get more support within the team. Because your colleagues have to think about what you can do with the Kiosk, we have explained that and provided training about it. It is an accessible way for visitors to buy a ticket for an activity or make reservations for a work or study place. They can also top up credit for printing and copying or pay their fine via the Zelfie column.”
